Audi Steering Issue

Common Causes of an Audi’s Steering Issues in Thousand Oaks

By Bavarian Performance Specialists January 29, 2023

Steering is one of the most important systems in any automobile. It allows drivers to control their vehicle by directing the tires in the direction they wish to go. However, like any system in an automobile, the steering system can experience issues that can negatively impact the handling and safety of your Audi.

Your Audi’s steering system consists of several key components, including the steering wheel, the steering column, the steering gear, and the steering linkage. The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering gear, which is responsible for converting the rotational motion of the steering wheel into linear motion of the wheels. The steering linkage is responsible for transmitting the motion from the steering gear to the wheels, allowing your Audi to turn and maneuver.

The steering system is typically powered by a power steering pump, which provides the necessary pressure to assist the driver in turning the steering wheel. All of these parts must be working properly to allow you to steer your Audi and remain safe on the roads when driving. When something goes wrong and you notice a problem, it’s important for your safety to have it fixed right away.

Causes of Steering Issues in Audi Vehicles

There are several reasons your Audi could develop steering issues, including:

  • Power Steering Fluid Leaks: A leak in the power steering system can cause a lack of power, making it harder to steer your Audi. This can occur due to a cracked or damaged hose, a worn-out seal, or a damaged pump. In some cases, the leak may be visible, and you may notice a puddle of fluid under your Audi. In other cases, the leak may be internal and not visible from the outside. In either case, it is important to have the leak repaired as soon as possible, as running the power steering system without enough fluid can cause damage to the pump and other components.
  • Power Steering Pump Failure: The power steering pump is responsible for providing pressure to the power steering system. If the pump fails, you may experience difficulty steering your Audi, especially at low speeds. In some cases, the pump may make a whining or growling noise when it fails. In other cases, it may simply stop working, causing the power steering system to lose pressure and making it harder to steer your Audi.
  • Steering Rack Leaks: The steering rack is the component that translates the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion of the wheels. If the steering rack develops a leak, you may lose power steering fluid and experience difficulty steering your Audi. Sometimes, you might hear a clicking or knocking noise coming from the front of your Audi when you turn the wheel. Whatever the case, it’s important to have the leak repaired as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the steering system.
  • Steering Column Issues: The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering rack. If there are problems with the steering column, you may experience difficulty steering your Audi. Some common issues with the steering column include loose or worn-out bearings, a damaged or broken shaft, and a misaligned or bent column. You may also experience a vibration or clunking noise when turning the wheel.
  • Electronic Steering Problems: Some newer models have electronic steering systems, which use sensors and actuators to assist with steering. If there are problems with the electronic components, you may experience difficulty steering your Audi. Some common issues include a malfunctioning sensor, a damaged actuator, or a problem with the electronic control module. You may also see a warning light on the dashboard, indicating a problem with the electronic steering system.
  • Tire Pressure and Alignment: Incorrect tire pressure and/or poor wheel alignment can also cause steering problems in your Audi. If the tire pressure is too low, it can cause your car to pull to one side or the other, making it difficult to steer. If the wheel alignment is off, the wheels may not be pointed correctly, making it harder to steer your car or SUV in a straight line.
